This is not one of those films I would usually watch but trailer on Netflix caught my eye so I decided to see what's it about.
It is a quite new film by Alex Garland (Ex Machina), made in 2018, based on the novel of the same name by Jeff VanderMeer. It stars Natalie Portman, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Gina Rodriguez, Tessa Thompson, Tuva Novotny, and Oscar Isaac.

Lena (Natalie Portman), a biologist and former soldier, joins a mission to uncover what happened to her husband inside Area X -- a sinister and mysterious phenomenon that is expanding across the American coastline. Once inside, the expedition discovers a world of mutated landscapes and creatures, as dangerous as it is beautiful, the shimmer threatens both their lives and their sanity.
In case you didn't know the world "annihilation" doesn't just mean destruction. In physics, annihilation is actually a form of creation, as defined by Merriam-Webster: "the combination of a particle and its antiparticle... that results in the subsequent total conversion of the particles into energy." Maybe this makes no sense to you now, but after you watch the film and start asking yourself questions about the 'shimmer' this could help you.
